Comic #8 : "Sudo Hire This Woman"
Tuesday 2nd April 2013
The readers of this comic can probably be divided into two groups: Those who don't understand it and those who don't understand why people who consider themselves geeks don't understand it.
Those in the second group please cover your eyes while I type the next sentence for the benefit of the first: "Sudo" is a command in Linux that is like a "Simon Says" for computers. And those in the second group will probably be cursing the inaccuracies in that explanation.
One of the pet peeves in geek culture is the treatment of women. Now, yes, geek culture is no worse than pretty much any other male dominated culture in this regard, however given that geeks (And I include myself as a geek, so I'm not using the term as a pejorative) grew up with things like Star Trek, which - within the limits imposed by the producers - tried to give a message of equality; are fascinated with technology and the future; and generally consider themselves to be smarter than the other male dominated groups I find it very disappointing that the objectification that goes on at technology events and in the press, and the dismissive attitude many male geeks have towards women in the industry.
The irony is that many of these 'geeks' who dismiss women are actually very shallow geeks themselves and the girls they are condenscending to are ten times the geek they will ever be.
