Western tourists holidaying in Thailand have expressed their satisfaction at the coup put on by the local army. Exact details are still coming in, but it appears that in the middle of the night a faction of the army entered Bangkok and announced they had overthrown the Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra.
"To see this is a once in a lifetime opportunity" Danish tourist Jannick Bondrop told journalists from the BBC. Others expressed similar feelings:
"This is crazy," British tourist Keith Wilson explained, "In July I was lucky enough to be at the World Cup final and witnessed Zidane headbutt that Italian, I thought that was going to be the big thing I saw in my life... but it's not going to even top the list for 2006. I've seen an actual military coup."
Chuck Hankman was equally estatic: "As soon as the tanks started rolling down the streets I got out my camera phone and started recording. I can't wait to share it around the office when I get back, it certainly beats the video of a cat shagging a sheep I got sent last week."
Rumours that a coup was about to take place had been circulating for hours before anything was confirmed, most arising from a delivery of "I was there for Coup 2006" T-Shirts to Bangkok's main hotel district.
