Chess Champion Ignores Iain Duncan-Smith - May 9th 2003

Iain Duncan Smith was shocked today when he was snubbed by a local celebrity on the grounds “he wasn’t important enough to stop for.”

Primary School Chess Champion Keith Wilson, from one of Mr Duncan-Smith’s neighbouring constituencies was walking on the other side of the road when Iain Duncan Smith tried to get his attention by gesticulating wildly on the other side of the road.

Iain Duncan-Smith Waved Wildly to get the Chess Champion's Attention

Despite Mr Duncan-Smith’s efforts, Keith Wilson did not stop but walked straight on taking no notice of animated MP.

Initially it was believed that the 9-year-old champion had not seen the Leader of the Opposition however in an interview later it was revealed he had indeed noticed Iain Duncan-Smith’s actions.

“I saw him before he saw me,” Keith Wilson explained, “I thought, I hope that man doesn’t notice me. He might ask for my autograph and I don’t really have the time.

“But unfortunately he did see me. He recognised me straight away: calling me over and waving like a mad man. He said he wanted to congratulate my achievement but I didn’t have the time – he wasn’t important enough to stop for. I had a photo shoot for the school magazine to attend. Jenny Small from Class 4 was going to be there – now there is someone worth stopping for… You don’t get the chance to mix with people like her every day.”
