Following the radical proposals by Reflag, an organisation set up to promote an alternative, racially equal alternative to Britain’s Union Flag, Random Perspective has decided to stand up in support for the organisation’s proposal to add black lines alongside their white counterparts in a stand to stamp out global racism.
The fact of the matter is that racism exists everywhere: in the work place, on the street at football matches and on nations’ flags. A flag is meant to represent all of its population, not just a portion of it; by highlighting the stark differences between white and black persons, the new flag is clearly showing the diversity that now exists amongst the British population and therefore can only be a good thing.
America is another diverse country with a red white and blue flag but no black. And it is another country with strong racist problems. It would be nice to see some of the 50 stars black - they could use the proportion of black to white stars to represent the diversity of their population.
Of course there will be opposition to this suggestion but if Britain, a country that has had it’s flag for 400 years, can change its flag then it will send a message to younger countries like America that perhaps there is “too much white in the stars and stripes.”
However, there are some changes that have not yet been implemented and we would like to see added to the final design.
For a start, gay people are being discriminated against as the flag only features straight lines. Clearly this homophobic attitude should not be tolerated and the flag should also be updated.
The Welsh were neglected 400 years ago, perhaps a dash of green could be added to the flags design as well. In 400 years time when we have Martian immigrants their skin colour will also be catered for meaning this flag will outlive its predecessor.
Also, in our efforts to be anti-racist we are discriminating against racists themselves. And homophobes, fascists and anti-Semitists. Therefore, the final design should be completed by the presence of a swastika in the centre to reflect the inclusion of these groups – especially considering the rise in popularity for political groups such as the BNP.
Once all these changes have been made, only then will we have a truly multicultural flag.
